Pilot lands aeroplane in a tree

A man has survived crash landing his plane into a tree on a Dundee golf course.

Vince Hagedorn chose to steer into the high branches of a small wood near the 15th hole of Caird Park Golf Course when he realised his two-seat microlight was running low on fuel.

He received a head injury but remained conscious enough to talk to emergency services. He was trapped atop the tree for an hour before firefighters rescued him using a 44-foot ladder.

Hagedorn later revealed his inspiration for the unconventional landing: the fictional First World War pilot Biggles.

He told BBC Scotland: "There's a story where Biggles has his engine shot up over enemy lines.

"He tries to get back to the airfield and doesn't quite make it and ends up with no height over a wood.

"What he does is he flies into the wood, and, as he flies into the wood, he pulls the stick back to pancake onto trees - and I just did that. I just stalled into the tree."

Hagedorn was the only person in the microlight. Nobody else was injured.
